Protection from ambrosia pollen

  • It is impossible to ensure absolute protection from ambrosia pollen if this plant is present in immediate or slightly remote environment. The wind can carry the pollen over dozens of kilometers and even further.

However, certain steps can be taken to reduce the exposure to this allergen. The suggested steps should be taken in the period when ambrosia is blossoming, i.e. from late July or early August to October.

A walk or any instance of leaving the house should be planned after a rain or in the evening, when the pollen grains become heavier due to increased humidity. Similarly, the house should not be left in windy conditions.

Spending time outdoors, such as day-trips or recreation in nearby parks and meadows is not recommended. If, however, some time is spent outdoors, hair must be washed afterwards. Clothes should not be hung out to dry outdoors.

The rooms in the house should be aired minimally and not in the morning. When the pollen count is high, air-conditioners should be used.

It is vital to follow the media reports and official web-sites which provide information about the pollen count and adjust daily activities accordingly.

Holidays should be planned in the areas where this plant is either not present or present on significantly smaller areas.
